Transitioning the farm to the next generation is about more than finances—it’s about people, planning, and purpose. Join us for a presentation that dives into the practical and emotional sides of transitioning the family farm.

We’ll explore how to prepare both the farm and the family for the future, including strategies for communication, succession planning, and managing change. Learn how to thoughtfully "take the farmer off the farm" while honoring their legacy and supporting their next steps.

This session will also feature a real-life case study of a farm family navigating their own transition journey—sharing lessons learned, challenges faced, and how they found a path forward.

Whether your client is just starting to think about transition or are already in the middle of the process, this presentation will offer valuable insights and tools to guide your next steps.

Allison Henkel - Tax Partner at BDO - Woodstock, ON

Take a moment to reflect on the legacy you’ll leave behind—not just in documents, but in the stories, values, and memories that define your life and family. Each attendee can bring a buddy - one free guest - partner, family member or friend, for this special summer event.

Leaving a Legacy: Preserving Family Memories is an inspiring and interactive workshop focused on approaches to identifying stories, capturing relevant memories and details, and preserving those stories for generations to come. You’ll leave with some practical tips on how to record and organize these memories, whether through writing, audio, or photos. By the end of the session, you’ll leave with tools and ideas to start creating a lasting legacy that goes beyond material possessions. It's not just about preserving the past—it’s about sharing who you are with the future.

Renouncing a US citizenship is an important decision for your client. We will look closely all the tax obligations facing a US citizen, how they affect everyday life, and why it’s crucial to renounce citizenship properly.

The presentation will answer these questions and more:

    • What happens if I haven’t filed US taxes in several years (or ever)?
    • Which US benefits am I still eligible for after I renounce?
    • What are the most common reasons why US citizens living abroad renounce their US citizenship?
    • Can I still collect US Social Security after renouncing properly? (hint: yes)
    • What will my relationship with the US be like after renouncing my citizenship? How will it affect travelling?
    • What are the pros and cons of renouncing and do the benefits of US citizenship outweigh the costs?
    • How do I determine if I or a family member are US citizens without realizing it?
    • What are the IRS filing and reporting obligations for those who have/had a US green card?

Alexander Marino has years of experience in cross-border tax law, estate planning, corporate tax, and US expatriation law. In addition to leading the US Tax Practice Group at Moodys Tax Law, Alexander also heads the US renunciation practice, annually representing hundreds of clients worldwide in properly giving up their US citizenship or terminating their US green card status. He regularly speaks on the topic of US renunciation and expatriation in Canada and around the world as one of the foremost experts in this area of law.

Alexander is a member of the New Jersey State Bar, Pennsylvania State Bar, American Bar Association Tax Section and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S.B.A. in Finance and Marketing in 2006, Alexander received his JD from Duquesne University School of Law in 2010 and an LLM in taxation from the University of Florida Levin College of Law in 2011.
